Mr. Smylie is a former Deputy Real Estate Commissioner for the State of California , and currently interacts with the Department of Real Estate on a regular basis. For more than 25 years, Mr. Smylie has personally been involved in the creation, formation, and processing of all types of subdivision interests which require registration with the Department of Real Estate (“Department”), including, but not limited to, master planned communities, condominiums, mixed-use and high-rise condominiums, condominium conversions, planned developments, and undivided interest subdivisions. Mr. Smylie’s experience both inside and outside of the Department gives him a keen perspective on the subdivision process that enables him to guide clients in dealings with the state agency.
Mr. Smylie also has extensive transactional and entitlement experience. He has been involved in all aspects of real estate development, including acquisitions, dispositions, financing, construction, insurance and the entitlement procurement process involving all levels of governmental entities. In addition to representing national and regional developers, institutional real estate clients, and financial institutions regarding subdivision and real estate development matters, Mr. Smylie routinely consults with and advises real estate brokerage clients, property management firms, escrow companies, and mortgage brokerage companies concerning their business practices and compliance issues involving the California Department of Real Estate.
